About Charcoal Basalt

Basalt is cooled lava — a dense volcanic stone with a fine, even grain and almost no absorption. It is often shelved with granite in the trade, but it is a different rock entirely: no visible crystals, no speckle, just an even dark field. It is the toughest material in this library by a wide margin: it takes vehicle traffic, freeze-thaw, and salt without complaint.

Visually it is the modern minimalist choice. A large-format flamed basalt patio in charcoal, with tight joints, is about as quiet and architectural as an outdoor floor gets, and it makes planting and water read very clearly against it.

The one real constraint is thermal. A dark, dense stone in direct sun gets genuinely hot — this is not a barefoot surface in a hot climate. Specify it for shaded courtyards, driveways, walkways, and cladding, and use a pale stone where people will be barefoot.

Living with it.

Heat underfoot
Absorbs heat. Keep it shaded, vertical, or indoors if people go barefoot.
Wet traction
Flamed and bush-hammered are excellent, including on ramps. Honed basalt is slick when wet.
Maintenance
Very low. Optional sealer to prevent oil staining on driveways. No acid sensitivity.
Water absorption
<0.5% — dense, resists staining well.
