About Golden Quartzite

Quartzite is sandstone that heat and pressure have fused into something close to quartz — hardness around 7 Mohs, which is harder than a steel blade. Golden quartzite carries iron and mica, so it flashes in raking light in a way no travertine ever will.

Its natural cleft splits along the bed into thin, irregular panels, which is why it dominates the ledger-panel and flagstone categories. On a column wrap or a retaining wall face, the shadow line between courses does most of the design work.

Underfoot it is nearly unwearable, but the cleft surface is irregular — pleasant on a garden path, wrong for a dining terrace where chairs need to slide.

Living with it.

Heat underfoot
Warm in direct sun but not punishing. Fine on a patio; think twice at a pool.
Wet traction
Natural cleft gives excellent traction. Honed quartzite is fine dry, moderate wet.
Maintenance
Very low. Seal only to ease cleaning on kitchen surrounds.
Water absorption
<0.5% — dense, resists staining well.
