Limestone gives you the colour range of travertine without the holes. Where travertine is pitted and rustic, a honed or brushed limestone is smooth, matte, and uniform — a genuinely calm surface that lets architecture do the talking.
It is the stone of French courtyards and of a great deal of contemporary coastal work, and it takes large formats well: a 24x36 limestone paver with tight joints reads almost like a poured surface, but warmer.
Limestone is softer and more absorbent than marble, so it wants a good sealer and it will patina. Many designers consider that patina the reason to choose it. Clients who want the stone to look new in ten years should be told plainly that it will not.
